Give explicit permission for others at your school to question and rattle the collective mindset. Teachers may experiment, but they are unlikely to challenge the status quo without the support of a school leader. Over time, many schools have actually bred a culture of powerlessness among the very people we need to change. To overcome this, permission must be given from the top. The Ministry of Education in Ontario, Canada, provided their districts with permission to question and innovate by acknowledging the changing landscape of education and being up-front about the messiness of the process. Leaders at the top acknowledged that change would be messy and encouraged others to jump in without waiting for the perfect answer. They created a culture of risk taking that gave employees permission to try new things. Organizations that allow employees to take risks push the boundaries of creativity and what is possible.
